I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Optiplex 7010 with a Radeon HD 7570 VGA

Same behavior here. A brand new installation of a amd64 Ubuntu 14.04
(dual boot win 8) which resulted in a a broken grub2 ("symbol
'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"). This is fresh install, no grub-
install. Grub2 is normaly on /dev/sda.
Using the BIOS Boot menu (or Super Grub 2 disk) is
let me add one thing: i think this might only happen, if ubuntu has
detected webcam. due to the preview picture of the webcam the gui window
is being resized and therefore you end up stuck on that screen..

The issue would appear to be the "Display Status Bar" option of the Nvidia
drivers.
Where as in earlier versions of KDE this option appeared to have no effect, (I
have not noticed it before, and have never seen a nvidia status bar).
When enabled it causes crashes in the plama workspace in KDE

Confirmed, I experienced the same crash when attempting to install the
open source ATI driver via jockey. Going to "Appearances" and attempting
to enable extra desktop effects triggers jockey, which will then attempt
to install the ATI drivers, and crashes unexpectedly.

Confirming. I'm having this problem as well. I haven't had any crashes
with it, but fast switching can and does cause repeating login prompt
noises as you described. If I recall correctly, restarting the X server
fixes the problem. (Ctrl-alt-backspace or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart)

In hindsight: Me thinks plucker doesn't have much to do with this particular
error.
Anyway: after the upgrade I couldn't access the envidia xserver settings. But
then, I installed envy again with synaptic, and used envy to install the nvidia
driver. This worked fine.
What can I say? ;)
