Same happens to me, using X2GO, connecting to Ubuntu 20.04 in WSL2.
This worked for me:
Control Center > Look and Feel > Mate Teak > Windows > Window Manager
Select: Marco (no composition)
It removes the thick border, leaving a very thin one.

The issue is not really a bug, but the consequence of an unfortunate
sequence of events.

creating a gnome keyboard mapping for evolution composer, of letter ¨o
into evolution/composer/pgp-sign toggle.
