Having the same issue. It is accompanied by the screen going black for 1
or 2 seconds.

It occurs in approx every 2 minutes when the laptop is operating on
battery. When plugged in, it happens much less frequently (3 times so
far in an hour).

I have the same problem for a Karmic with gnome. Screensaver does not
start automatically, but 'gnome-screensaver-command -a' starts it. It
worked fine in Jaunty.
