I did a test tonight in Ubuntu 17.10 GNOME (3.26), fully updated.
I installed KODI in this virtual machine (VirtualBox) and I received the
message in the attached screenshot.
Although the message indicates "failed", KODI is installed and running !

After several attempts to install Ubuntu from the same USB stick, I succeeded
doing so:
- downloading kubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso and burning a DVD-RW
- keeping the DVD in the player
- Stopping Windows but with the choice "Reboot" and pressing the Shift key all
along the closing process
