I have an LVM volume that spans two drives, I am not trying to boot off
it or use it for /home, it is just additional storage. Since doing a
fresh install of Lynx, I have been unable to get it to activate on boot.
The fstab entry is:

Update: setting system-preferences-appearance-visual effects=None
seems to fix it... quite annoying that with default settings you can't
get video to play!

Update: Maybe not a problem with vlc... I just experienced similar
behaviour with mplayer... perhaps it's a compiz glitch?

I have been having the same or similar problem. I would open Firefox and it
would only be maximized and could only get out of it by going to file-close or
alt-tab to another application to get the Gnome menu and application bars to
minimize it.
I saw someone had the problem here with
Firefox didn't crash with my amd64 pc, but Sun's Java demo applet only worked
after following Mathew Koyle's:
sudo apt-get build-dep icedtea-java7-plugin
sudo apt-get -b source icedtea-java7-plugin icedtea-java7-bin icedtea-java7-jre
icedtea-java7-jdk
sudo dpkg -i icedtea-java7-*deb

I got confused by this. Totem-gstreamer properties in synaptic clearly
states (wrongly?) amongst its many features : DVD (with menus). Please

own XKB error after using 'system - preferences - keyboard' in Feisty.
