hi, just to tell I the same problem here, on my ThinkPad X24 (Radeon Mobility M6 LY). I tried lated driver from XorgOnTheEdge (namely xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.195+git20071020tv_i386), I disabled every DRI, acceleration, etc. Always the same complete lockup when going back to X (from VT).
