Installing the ubuntu-desktop package, I also found that the onscreen
display not being displayed when changing brightness seems to be a KDE
bug,
@seanlano: That's just the same in my case, I always have to repeat the
workaround after suspend or shutdown.

XPS13 backlight stopped wor
As of kernel 3.8.0-25-generic, backlight is not properly working for me
(xps ubuntu edition, 13.04 kubuntu clean install). With the workaround
echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness the brightness
keys work, but the on screen display isn't shown when changing
brightness. However,
Thanks Till, that solved it for me, too. Unfortunately some packages
like wine flash etc had to be removed as well. I hope that I can
reinstall them savely after the update is finished.
