shows version 2.6.27-11-generic, whereas current Hardy kernel is at version
2.6.24-22-generic. It looks like the same problem encountered by Treviño, i.e.
that kernel version 2.6.27 don't include in their linux-header
Have you tested it on Intrepid or Hardy? I've Hardy installed and on my system
linux-source is not needed.

I compiled the new module from the link provided by apollo13, but it
didn't loaded, giving an Unknown symbol in module, or unknown
parameter error message. So I did the patch modifications by hand on
the r8169.c source, compiled and loaded the module successfully. But it
worked like the old
I still have this problem on my laptop. Tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the package, and I got the stack smashing error message.
I resorted to the dirty workaround.

Dear Djainette , I had the same problem with apt and cups related
packages. A workaround is to switch to single user mode and reconfigure
the package, i.e. dpkg-reconfigure cupsys-driver-gutenprint. Hope this
