I have retired the (laptop) machine that exhibited this behaviour. I
certainly haven't seen it with my new(er) machine, running Hardy. I'm

Nothing has been fixed. Given that the both reported instances were on

work-around by doing
sudo apt-get remove nfs-common
nfs-common would previously not upgrade. Was listed under distribution
upgrades in update manager and was greyed out. Removing this package
allowed the upgrade to proceed. I got the idea from your (Osmo) comment
on bug #154968.

I think a nice solution would be that if mp3gain tries to operate on a
directory, it should open that directory and operate on each file in
that directory (or an option to recurse subdirectories) and to ignore
empty directories. Some basic checking of input arguments should clear
this right up.

Correction:
Switching to console produces the same behaviour as shutdown. Coloured
blocks and system hangs. Must be forced shut down.
