Hi I'm having the same problem with a dell inspiron 1525 running ubuntu 8.04. It works fine until I do the updates, after which I lose the soundcard settings (and it doesn't seem to know it's got a soundcard any more) and the wireless network. I'm just about to ask DELL ubuntu support to see if they can help - presumably this is affecting everyone with this laptop doing these updates.
In the meantime, what are the risks in leaving it without any updates, or does anyone know which of the 1,000-odd updates will cause the problem, so I can uncheck that box before updating?
