After many moons, I realized I had upgraded to a new bios that supports SATA raid better under vista. Bios V3.10 I believe. Backdating to the previous release fix the problem and allowed for a full install to run. Had the same problem re-occurr when the mainboard was replaced recently on the

Hey folks. this bug is a symptom of a problem that is way higher up the Debian food chain. the fix for this needs to come from the Debian distro folks. If 7.04 does not work for you stick with 6.10, it's stable and it works. I have no idea whether or not this issue will be fixed by 7.10.

I don't know how to answer that one, I know that this computer I am using now has 6 pata drives and 2 sata drives in it and 2 of the pata drives are on a pci addon card. If you cannot get pata working in 7.04 there may be additional issues with that particular kernel that they released with it.
