Kate intermittently crashes when opening a file. I'm running gnome
desktop, but using the Kate application.

Please re-open this bug -- I agree 100% with what DaveAbrahams said -
it's the same problem for me. It should at least come up with a proper
error message/question/warning of this, not relying on postinstall to
