When I plug headphones into the headphone jack, the built-in speakers do
not mute, although they do in Windows. Also, headphone jacksense is
missing. I am guessing it's because there isn't a physical mute that
disables the internal speakers when the headphones are plugged in.

If the laptop is untouched for about ten minutes, the display dims to a
blank screen. If I catch it in time, it stops, but if I am away, and I
type something, the login comes up, and I have to sign in to get back
onto the computer.

Had the same problem.
Fixed by by disabling options snd-hda-intel power_save=10
