during normal apt-get upgrade.
Had previously installed an i386 libc6 to get flash plugin to work; then
had disabled the foreigh arch.
Trying with it reenabled ..

Figuring out how to get a backtrace was a bit tricky, there should be a
howto or somesuch .. https://wiki.edubuntu.org/DebuggingProgramCrash is
incomplete and lacks detail.
