I get the exact same error. Backup is started automatically every week
and is only configured from the Ubuntu control panel. This only occurred
after upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10.

I have the desktop scale set to 2 when using the builtin screen. When
using an external monitor I have set the computer to move the desktop to
the external monitor and set the desktop scale to 1.
This all work perfect

The suggested changes to php.ini does not seems to work as intended..
The problem actually is a more general problem with php 5.3 (As reported
below), and I therefore recommend to update php 5.3.1 to at least php
5.3.2, where the problem is solved, and maybe raise the importance of
the bug a bit

I was trying to find the package sysinfo which gives various
INFOrmations of the computers HARDWARE.
I started by search for the word info which gave to many results, so I
continued on with the term info hardware which gave no results, I
This problem also appeared on my old Acer Aspire 3610.
For me it seems like a general problem for acer laptop.
The command sudo rmmod acer_wmi fixed the problem for me to :)

acer_wmi in Jaunty on Aspire One exposes non-functional (always disabled)

I don't know in what update things has been fixed but for about one week
ago things startet working for me, on all my computers, with rhythmbox
to connect to gvfs file shares.
Btw, I use Ubuntu Intrepid ;)
