I have an Aspire ES1-111 and facing the same issue. I use 14.04 LTS though with
always the latest updates.
I also tried to track the problem without success. I couldn't reproduce it on

Nothing works when freeze occures, no crash dump, no logging, no SSH.

If I move the mouse very slowly, the pointer is transferred (or at least
hidden), but if I move fast, there is a 90% probability of triggering the bug.

My bad. ata2 is the CD ROM. With the 80 GB drive, suspend resume seems
to be working fine. I had not encountered this error with earlier
versions of the ubuntu with ata1 or ata2. Will see if fresh install in
the 160 GB drive will change anything.

I replaced the new 160 GB hard drive with the older 80 GB pata hard
drive with Ubuntu 8.10. Suspend resume works like charm with 8.10. I
then did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04 on the 80 GB hard drive and on
suspend and resume I am seeing this error again

I have the exact same problem with dell 700m 160 GB samsung PATA drive.
After resume dmesg has the exact same pattern as reported earlier
ata1: device not ready (errno=-16), forcing hardreset
I recompiled 2 versions of 2.6.28.9 vanilla kernel so that I get drives
as /dev/hda* with one and /dev
