removing those unstripped libraries was a temporary fix. issue started
occuring again without even rebooting machine. removing pulseaudio
appears to be a permanent solution for me so far.

Thanks for the hwinfo/printf tip. My widescreen LCD monitor doesn't even
support 1600x1200 so setting that in SUM causes grub to fault when
loading my kernel (although allowing me to continue booting with a safe
resolution after a delay).
hwinfo --monitor isn't accurate, neither is read-edid/get-e

uninstalling the unstripped versions of those libraries, installing the
standard ones and rebooting the computer worked for me. (i believe
365638 could be the same bug as this.)
maybe vlc dependencies need to be adjusted so it depends on libraries
that work and conflicts with the unstripped versio
FWIW, I have AA1 with a swapped at network card (Broadcom). It didn't
work either.

aticonfig seems to be unable to use 'empty' xorg.conf
as a workaround, I've managed to re-fill xorg.conf with proriate data using
commang:
Xorg -configure
This command brought me an "xorg.conf.new" file in the current directory. I've
copied it over /etc/X11/xorg.conf (back up previous version!)

This problem happened to my wife running amd64!Dapper. No hibernation
issue - the machine apparently spontaneously rebooted, and rather than
replaying the ReiserFS journal, GRUB failed with the aforementioned
Error 16. Booting into an older kernel in recovery mode fixed the
