I've just updated to 10.4 RC, and now the card is being handled by sky2
driver, without any intervention from my side.

Found the solution; downloaded drivers from http://www.marvell.com/support.html
(for kernel 2.6, install_v10.84.3.3.tar.tar).
Managed to compile them, modprobe sk98lin, eth0 works.
So it's apparently the sky2 driver problem.

Wireless works perfectly. It's new laptop/first install of Ubuntu (next to
Win7, where wired net works).
Tried the
