After a not so small number of crashes, I noticed that in most cases
gnome-settings-daemon crashed when I tried to close an application which

Apport finally catched the crash during the work (not at startup/login).
Since I'm not sure if those issues are the same, I reported gnome-

Is there any other way to hunt down this issue except with apport
(since, as Zeppe said and I can confirm, it obviously doesn't detect

This happens to me too, but not only on startup. From time to time,
theme gets broken (gnome-settings-daemon dies) when I close an
application (not certain app, but seems to be random). I also have
modified gdm with 'gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-

Just learned that the cause for this issue was TeXLive 2007/2008's
version of install-info which is in conflict with system's version of

Hi. Actually, I learned just a couple of days ago, while testing the
same issue with ocrad (Bug #295542), that the cause was TeXLive 2007 and
TeXLive 2008 version of install-info which is in conflict with system's
version of install-info, so solving bug #295542 automatically solves
this one too.

No problem. Yes, I do. Actually, I have installed some core packages of
TeXLive 2008 from Ubuntu repos (those that were needed by LaTeX editors
like Kile and Texmaker as dependencies) and have installed full TeXLive
2009 from the DVD into a folder inside my /home directory (and added its

Just to add:
1. When installing ocrad 0.17-4 from Ubuntu repos, i get above mentioned
error. To prevent system always complaining when installing new apps, I
added a line containing "exit 0" just below "set -e" in
/var/lib/dpkg/info/ocrad.postinst. After this, "sudo apt-get install -f"

Actually, it is. I still receive the same error on Ubuntu 9.10, 64bit,
ocrad 0.17.4. I had to add "exit 0" to postinstallation script
(/var/lib/dpkg/info) to prevent error to show up every time I install or
remove anything. But this is not a real solution, just temporary I hope.
