Keyboard backlight does not work
... on my old 14.04 installation the backlit was always on, using CMS
and EFI off. I switched to EFI because of a CMS-related issue causing
kernel panics

Kieran's solution doesn't work for me on Xubuntu 15.10 (900X3E). I can edit the
values with
xxd -p
/sys/firmware/efi/efivars/KBDBacklitLvl-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c
but they have no effect. Any ideas what else to try?
