Clarification, by adding usershare owner only = False I'm now able to
create new shares again even on my NTFS external harddrive. Of course
all my original shares I had on this disk are permanently deleted by the
upgrade process.
I understand the security implication and agree that the proper fix
I tried to watch CTRL-ALT-F1 right after the gdm logon but I saw only a
black screen (maybe this is because my intel x.org driver has problems
with virtual terminals, not sure). Also during my normal ubuntu usage,
if I switch to CTRL-ALT-F1 then I see the normal console output there

It's possible that the dist upgrade overwrote my smb.conf (not sure
actually) but I was never made aware of the fact that this would cause
me to loose all my SMB shares. Maybe a warning text should be added so

Yes, Ubunbu becoming slow is very much expected but it should be
possible to cancel any mess and the machine should never freeze to the
point when it's not possible to move the mouse.

FWIW, I just tried it on Vista and W2K. On the latter I was able to
recover just fine although it took 2-3 minutes before all my programs
were swapped back into RAM. On the former taskmgr.exe just crashed so I
could not get the fork bomb to stop but on Vista it can run the fork
bomb for 10 minutes
I think it's fair to say that it's a problem that I can login to my
shared web hosting company and run some command that makes the whole
server unresponsive for several minutes. For this reason (and to avoid
the laptop crash), I would like to see a change ubuntu default config
here.

(problem came from apt-get some where between t4 and beta). I did have
customized colors setup before I was hit by the black on black problem.

Then amonst the lspci -n output I got (lines corresponding to the above

I booted Gutsy LiveCD on my desktop today and I can confirm that this
bug is still active in Gutsy. It's still very easy to fix though, just
double-click the sound icon and inside volume control dialog you
select the Switches tab, and finally you uncheck the checkbox called
Audigy Analog/Digital

On a home network without any windows domain server or any special DNS
server config (just normal DHCP and public internet DNS). Do this:
1. Boot Gutsy Live CD
2. Select Places::Connect to Server...
3. Fill in service type Windows share and enter hostname (not IP, and note
the bad error message (it's way too generic, it doesn't tell you
anything useful at all)
