Had the same problem, as follows: I used Mythbuntu 7.10 as a Live CD and
the On-Screen Display (OSD) worked just fine while watching Live TV. I
then loaded Mythbuntu onto the hard drive and attempted to watch Live
TV. I did not fuss with settings, except to tell it where the backend
is. However, no OSD would display during LiveTV on the frontend; only
TV would display. My backend and other frontends still worked fine. I
did a clean reload of Mythbuntu two more times in a vain attempt to make
the problem go away.

I then fiddled with every setting in the Mythbuntu frontend I could.
The only thing that fixed it was changing the Theme appearance to
Mythbuntu (the installed default was G.A.N.T). Suddenly, the OSD
worked, for all different OSD themes. I fiddled with all the settings
to see it I could "break" it again, but I couldn't. I went back to
G.A.N.T. appearance theme and OSD still worked for LiveTV. I have no
idea what or why. I don't have the time to recreate this problem to
verify my fix. If you need more info, I'll share what I know.

Some info:
MythDora 4.0 as a dedicated backend, Mythbuntu dedicated front end.

I attached my mythbuntu's dmesg and Xorg.0.log files to give you
something to pick around in. Ignore if you don't need them.
