The keyboard backlight is working, and can be controlled by the
BIOS/hardware (Fn+F5 key).
However, it _cannot_ be controlled by either:
- the GUI (power settings), which have no effect, or
- the /sys/devices/platform/dell-laptop/leds/dell::kbd_backlight/ kernel
interface.

Invstigating the problem that S-Video output is blackwhite on my
Fujitsu Siemens small office PC running XBMCbuntu, I found that xrandr
is not recognizing the TV output, even though the Xorg logfile shows it
(and it works, albeit in blackwhite for the moment).
In the output
I can confirm this problem for a Thinkpad X31. This is a crazy display
of arrogance and ignorance on Canonical's part, but alas, it is not the
first.
