I've got this problem, too, on a Thinkpad T60. Poking any of the three
volume buttons (they're in the upper-left of the keyboard) neither
changes the volume, nor brings up the on-screen display.
Changing the volume via the little speaker icon on the tray, though,
works fine.

anything that helped -- in particular, I removed the word splash from
/boot/grub/menu.lst, rebooted, and confirmed that no splash screen

For what it's worth: I originally experienced the problem using the
default kernel -- 2.6.28-11-generic. Booting an older kernel --
2.6.27-11-generic -- didn't help.

This is the best stack trace I've been able to get (I commented out the
dh_strip line in debian/rules, set the environment variable
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS to nostrip noopt, and did fakeroot make -f
debian/rules clean binary. I haven't yet figured out how to statically
link it, though.

I just ran aptitude, and purged samba and everything that it depended
upon (including libpam-smbpass), and that made the problem go away.
