yesterday i search for failed to connect to socket var run dbus
system_bus_socket
first login in terminal (alt+f1) then sudo dhclient and did following things.
and the solution reinstall dbus dbus-demon, so as a try , i reinstall
hal,xorg-core,xorg-radeon, xorg-ati , initscript,
my bash_histroy file for exact flow of commands i did to solve this
problem.

If not, could you describe the conditions under which the crash tends to occur?

third time i got gdm and xorg problem. ati driver problem.
yesterday lucid update 22 feb 2010 in morning. no desktop no gui, only ubunut

please look into this matter. it happen 3rd time . i daily update ubuntu
lucid.
init: ureadahead-other main process (653) terminated with status 4 and hang or
no desktop. ubuntu splash is showing.

i install dkms from synaptic package 2.1.1.1-0ubuntu3(lucid)
and problem solve.
sudo apt-get upgrade has no error.
