I understand this bug is marked Won't Fix.
But I'd like to record that I'm getting same kind of error running
Ubuntu 18.04 (latest), with Unity Desktop (which I prefer to GNOME).
I't a great shame he WorkSpaces won't work reliably for me - it is SUCH
a useful feature if you have a lot of windows

Just to add, too was experiencing high RAM usage & what appeared to be a
slow but steady memory leak in Unbunti 16.04 (latest). In my case, I
discovered at least part of the problem was one or more (yet to be
determined) Firefox (v49.0) plugins/add-ons. People also running Firefox
might like to ret
Experiencinig same problem onUbuntu 16.04 (latest). Was working fine
before a recent update.

Open Recent Items show as always empty in Ge
I had exactly the same problem (ubuntu 16.04 latest). Just started
happenning, no apparent cause or changes beforehand.
Tried all the usual suggestions: eg:
a) rm -r ~/.config/pulse; pulseaudio -k - reboot
b) Open VLC,Go to Preferences,then to Sound,click in the reset preferences
button,Close VL
I have exactly the same problem using latest version - mango-lassi
001+dfsg-5 - on Ubuntu 14.04. Any chance of a fix?

apt-get purge mtop
- complained a bit but seems to have worked and nothing appears broken

Please can someone give me at leaast a work around for this problem.
I am currently lumbered with Ubuntu 10.04 by my ISP (& cannot upgrade to
12.04 without completely redepolying my server) - and this issue is
preventing me installing ANY packages it seems. ie. renders whole server
pretty useless.
Could I add to this please - o too have experienced this exact problem
on apache restart - whilst/after adding ssl directives to my vhosts
entries - i was forced to revert out ssl entries to get apache+vhosts to
start again. i made the vhosts entries using zpanal apache vhosts
