For anyone who has this problem you can do the following commands to
change your bit rate from 54Mb/s to 11Mb/s
tell it that you want a manual bitrate instead of auto:

Hi, I am using a Belkin F5D7050 v 4000 Wireless G USB device which uses
the rt73 driver.
My problem is that whenever the card is using a lot of bandwidth, e.g.
downloading updates and other things, the whole computer seems to go all
choppy. even the mouse and trying to movie
I had the exact same problem and i managed to fix it by randomly changing my
PCI-Express BIOS settings
I spent weeks trying to figure out why it was freezing loading ubuntu, even
from the livecd, then i tried unpluging my pci-express card and pluging in the
integrated graphics and it worked! so
