It turned out that a socket from an initial failure was still open by the
failed zombie process. I had to do:
sudo apt-get purge mysql* mariadb*
reboot
Then try again:
sudo apt-get install mariadb-server mariadb-client
This finally worked. I don't know what caused the initial failure.

Sorry all,
The upgrade problem was due to intermetiate build of cinnamon desktop.
Once I removed those packages the upgrade proceeded properly.
Sorry about that, it was so long ago now that I have no exact records of
the problematic packages, but they were all from cinnamon project.
