Yes, this is very much a bug. While ELF position independent executables
are ELF shared objects, they weren't being recognized as executables by
desktop launchers. So they wouldn't run.

I've had a discussion with Christos Zoulas, the root maintainer of
‘file’, and they will make the necessary changes in due course. Whether
this will be noticed by all the forks and re-implementations such as
xdgmime in Gnome, I don't know.

Fritzing had been previously informally downloaded and installed as a
user application in $HOME/Applications/fritzing-0.9.3b.linux.AMD64. This
would only run from the command line, and Nautilus couldn't start
Fritzing properly.

I'd like to suggest closing this bug, as I've found that it's not
triggered by Ubuntu packages but by legacy packages hiding in
~/.qgis2/python/plugins. If one clears out this folder, qgis starts
without problems.

Still present in Ubuntu 14.10. Evince is substituting vastly incorrect
fonts. DejaVu-Serif for Times-Roman is forgivable through ignorance, but
Liberation Sans for ZapfDingbats is in “what is this I don't even”
country.

The Epson duplex scanners don't (unfortunately) report the fact that
they scan even pages upside down from the ADF. Their own software
(including the built-in scan to PDF on SD card function) flags the
rotated pages in the PDF so they display properly, but the raster is

It's still a problem in ghostscript_9.10 — not that pdfopt was much use
anyway. It's always better to create PDFs at the size you need them then
try to squish them afterwards. Also, the often recommended pdf2ps/ps2pdf
route will likely break a lot of PDF files out there.
