I found a work around as opposed to a fix to 6.10 which is to install
the new Ubuntu 7.04. It works fine and installs the grub as it is
supposed to on an SATA hard dive. Thank you Ubuntu team for the new
7.04 software!

Public bug reported:
1st attempt failed at installation of grub. Found on start of 2nd
attempt to install Kubuntu that grub target was set for hd0 on first
attempt, which does not exist on this SATA system.
2nd attempt was to change grub target to sda1. This failed with fatal
error as well.
