I found the solution to this on my system.
I had installed a non-ubuntu distribution of python (stackless python).
This became the default python installation used by the system, but was
located in /usr/local/bin/python not /usr/bin/python, so the path to all
the other modules was wrong.
To fix,
The /etc/ directory shows a libusers.conf file.
Needed to add /etc/libuser.conf
Obviously a type somewhere

suggests using F-Spot photo manager.
Does not open.
Does not open from menu either.

Selecting SYSTEMADMINISTRATIONPRINTING does not work. Taskbar shows
'Starting Printing' momentarily but no window appears.

After unmounting a SD card in card reader, icon and volume disappears as
expected.
However, removing and reinserting SD card does not remount volume.
Neither does unmounted volume appear in Computer.
I have to log out to see disk again.

Using Thunderbird version 2.0.0.12 (20080227) with Hardy 8.04
When two windows are open and shown in taskbar, cannot switch to
thunderbird using task bar, I have to minimize other window to see TB
window.
Application switcher works
I have experienced this too.
Furthermore, the problem window exhibited another bug. After failing to
rename the new folders, I moved up a few directories and attempted to
make a new folder in Home. The new folder appeared in the same location
as the earlier problem (2 levels deeper in directory
I should mention I did have Visual Effects on, but after closing and
reopening the window, having VE on made no difference (no problem
occurred).
