Sorry should have said, I tried kdesudo and it didn't work so I did sudo
su - password and then just alien-arena

Got it working by running as root from console. This throws up a lot of errors
and another shutdown.
But it does create the symbolic link. It then starts ok from the games
menu/console as an ordinary user.

Just adding to report.
same problem on a fresh kubuntu install. using latest nvidia driver.
Have turned off desktop effects. but am unwilling to keep trying to replicate
problem, as i requires hard resetting.

It might also be related to lm-sensors. If no lm-sensors module is
loaded, everything seems to be working just fine.
Have reinstalled gutsy without lm-sensors configured. Been perfectly stable all
week.
With sensors installed i get random
dmesg log if usefull.

fitted new arial for computer/tv and now have signal strength of 10 (as high as
it go's.
It has cured the picture freeze etc but still get the same error of 2 buffers.
Also tried a video recorder and had the same error.
Tried the live version of mandriva with no problems as well as edgy.

I'm suffering the same probs as well.
I am running 32 bit version of kubuntu with standard kernel, lm-sensors are
installed but it still happens without.
I can sometime restart x-server with ctrl-alt-back but i usually end up with no
screen output at all and moniter shuts down.
