Same happens with the Byobu terminal. I realized that my Nautilus
windows don't have a frame anymore (see the attached screenshot). I
think this is related. SO probably, it's not a terminal problem, but a
theme problem. Quite annoying though... :-)

Yes, I rebooted my laptop, and then added the Xorg.0.log file.
To be sure I did a diff with Xorg.0.log.old, but that one had only minor
differences.
So don't think that file provides a clue...

I tried to do so in alsamixer, but that only shows the master and capture
channel, whereas I used to have many more options. Do you have an ideas where
and how to change the level of my PCM mixer control?

No, it's not an issue anymore. I was a while ago, and I think I solved it by a
fresh instal of an older Ubuntu version, (one that worked before) and upgraded
it later.
You can close this bug. Don't even have the good old laptop anymore... ;-)
