After I restart X server using CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, the next time I login into
Gnome,
the brightness applet doesn't work. The tooltip says "Cannot get laptop panel
brightness".
Machine : Lenovo thinkpad R60
OS : Feisty Fawn
Gnome Ver
Haven't seen this since.
Maybe this can be closed.

Okay, I found out what was causing the problem.
esd was stuck and once i killed it, login resumed normally.
I was able to reproduce this twice - each time esd was stuck.
An strace on it showed it had stopped on poll().

I am able to log into my machine without any problems now.
I tried to reproduce the problem by restarting my laptop many times and yes, it
happened again once.
And I noticed that the audio clip that plays as soon as gdm is loaded was in a
loop, kept playing forever. [ aplay ? ]

Really weird ...
To find out what was happening, I didn't login through gdm immediately, went to
a terminal using Ctrl-Alt-F1 and
typed strace -f -p 4211 -o new [ 4211 was the pid of gdmgreeter]
Came back to gdm and logged in , and it went in !!
I don't have a clue as to how this could happen ..
