I did an install of 16.04 kernel 4.4.0-38-generic and also had the
freeze after waking from sleep. The screen was visible but non
responsive. I had a lot of hard drive activity on boot when I did a
power down restart and a brief message about cleaning up orphaned
inodes. After reading the posts above, I tried replacing the X-Org video
driver that was installed by default with the Nvidia driver listed under
System Settings and the problem seems to be gone. It was pretty
consistent before I replaced the driver and has not happened in the last
2 days since I replaced the driver. Also, the orphaned inode message has
not appeared and the hard drive behaves normally on boot. I'll post if
it occurs again. Hope this helps someone.
