** Description changed:
Since upgrading the kernel above 4.4.0-154, starting with 4.4.0-157,
suspend does not work for me anymore. Never had such an issue in the
last 6 years.
This is the relevant output when suspend fails:
[ 328.25] PM: Suspending system (mem)
[ 328.288902]
Just tested both:
Suspend works successfully in v5.2-rc2
It does not work (with same error as above) in v5.2-rc3
Thank you!

Just tested. Same issue with the latest mainline kernel:

I can confirm the same problem since Dapper too. I am using Feisty at
the moment and still can only properly shut down when first manually
remove the snd-hda-intel module. The problem must lie in the module.

I have written this for Dapper and Edgy already, but the problem
persists in Feisty too:
My case (Toshiba A105-S2716):
1. acpi=force does not do anything
2. When I first remove (rmmod) the module snd-hda-intel and then try to
shutdown everything goes the way it should be.
Conclusion:
At least
i had to use the -generic Dapper kernel, but the standard -386 feisty
kernel does not exibit the bug anymore. for me it is solved.

I had always had the problem since Dapper and now Edgy. It is not
random, it always hangs.
What few people have mentioned though, at least with my system
Hibernation and Suspend work flawlessly, at least at turning the power
off. I do not know if this could be helpful,
Same problem here. It was working with Dapper and after the Edgy upgrade
it got broken. Fixed to the max. frequency of 1.73GHz.
That is what I get:
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep name
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz
$ sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino

I can confirm that this is a 'linux-image-2.6.17-10-386'-only problem.
The linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic has no such problem and scales the
frequency down to 800MHz and up when needed.
As a side effect the cooling fan is not working so often as earlier, I
think it depends on the frequency as
