Intel-nVidia CPU as well, which is my set-up: a Core2Duo with an nVidia
8400M. I does not at all happen on Oneiric 11.10, which I went back to.
It starts from 12.04 and continues into 12.10.
In my case this error appears only when I try to erase USB HDD (80 GB) with
Startup Disk Creator (in Ubuntu 12.10).
When I try to erase USB Flash sticks (1 GB or 2 GB) with Startup Disk Creator
(in Ubuntu 12.10) it's OK, no errors.

As there are currently no known URI Schemes
which use any non alphanumeric characters (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URI_scheme )
There is (svn+ssh://...) but its easy to miss on the page because its
hidden in the (ssh://...) description.

For anyone still looking for an alternative to the Metal look and Feel,
you can use com.sun.java.swing.plaf.nimbus.NimbusLookAndFeel. It looks
better than Metal, but still dated... Sun was never the greatest for
UI...
It should work with the Oracle JVM, but I'm guessing not the others.
I deinstalled Plymouth by using a special PPA which uses 'mountall'
without dependencies to Plymouth. So it is an Ubuntu-System without
Plymouth. In the German Ubuntu-Wiki is an instruction about how to do
this, because it seems to be a typical misbehavior and there are many
people who want to see

I have some good news: The problem was caused by Plymouth. I simply
deinstalled it everything works fine!!!

I also tried to reinstall the networkmanager, because it is often
mentioned in the log-files before this bug occurs, but without success.
Because I have to press Return to get to the Log-in-window, I
reinstalled rsyslog, but this misbehaviour didn't vanish.
