I faced the same problem, but was able to solve it. It seems like more
of a UI design problem. Just go to System Prefernces Sound Default
Mixer Tracks (on the Devices tab) and select 'Master'. The sound control
should work fine now.

Volume control applet does not handle keyboad up and down

/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems/remote_fetcher.rb
at the line 263 there is an attempt to use StringIO without importing
stringio
adding following line to top of this file fixes the problem
require stringio

The problem resolved itself after I removed the following line from
/etc/apt/source.list.
deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main
After removing it I restarted the PC and asked update manager to check
for updates. Then it said there are only 69 updates vs. orignal 73. All
of them looked

I have LinuxMint Bianca (2.2) which is based on Ubuntu Desktop 6.10. The
PC is a Compaq Evo N800c laptop. Uname -a shows 2.6.7.11 kernel. I
installed this a last month. The update manager helped me update from
2.6.7.10 kernel to 2.6.7.11
