- removed my locally built gthumb
- installed 3:3.3.1.is.3.2.7-0ubuntu1.1 from trusty-proposed
- launched first instance: gthumb &
- launched second instance: gthumb
- all good, launching more than one instance is possible

I surely didn't have them both installed, as apt-get wanted to remove
the old guest additions packages when I told it to install the new ones.

Yes, but there's a regression - manual column resizing is disabled now.
Check https://github.com/mate-desktop/caja/pull/838 which should fix it.
