Two comments though on current issue:
* The fv installed through Ubuntu package manager is pretty old
(3.0-17ubuntu1), could it be updated to a more recent version?
* While
Sun Presentation Minimizer 1.0+OOo2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1 is crashing
OpenOffice.org 1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1 on my up-to-date Ubuntu 8.10 distro
(upgraded from 8.04) with the same error:
terminate called after throwing an instance of
'com::sun::star::container::NoSuchElementException'

When using pylab/matplotlib under Ubuntu 8.10 (updated from 8.04) with
the GTKAgg backend, either in scripts or interactively within ipython,
the axes turn partially or fully black when zooming in. E.g., the
following session from ipython -pylab produced the attached image:
Same problem for me: I upgraded a critical machine from 6.06LTS to
8.04LTS, and I end up with a non-working GDM, very frustrating... I
cannot type login and password, but I can switch consoles (e.g. Ctrl-
Alt-F1) so the keyboard is *somehow* functional in GDM! Mouse is OK, and
keyboard works fine
In my case, it happened that module kbd was missing! (a bug in the
upgrade from 6.06?) So I manually installed package xserver-xorg-input-
kbd, and now everything is working fine. So my pb was probably not the
same as Slavek's one (which seems to be episodic), but maybe Stephen
should have a look
