Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 onto an Acer Aspire 5720, using a usb
flash drive as installation media,
the PC failed to boot with the message: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk
and press any key".

If the installation media was inserted during boot however, Xubuntu
booted fine.

Turns out the boot flag was missing in the primary partition.
The problem was fixed by setting the boot flag manually through gparted.
