I'm glad to hear you found a solution that works for you.
For completeness, and for anyone else with the same hardware who finds
this bug, the patch I described in comment #2 will not end up in Ubuntu
12.04. I've just checked a few things and support for AMD's Trinity
APU's was only introduced
The unsupported hardware watermark is with the proprietary fglrx
drivers, right?
The blank screen with the open-source drivers in 12.10 might be fixed in
the upstream 3.6-rc4 kernel thanks to this commit:

Dear Alex,
I gave up on Ubuntu and moved to Linux Mint 13. The issue with the
watermark was fixed by finding a script online.
