I'm not sure I agree with Brian's diagnosis here; if you're booting the
i386 image then it will never look for 64-bit kernels.
Could you please attach /proc/cpuinfo and /var/log/installer/syslog from
the installed system? (I gather you managed to install it eventually.)
--
Feisty beta won't
The generic kernel will used the kernel best suited for your system
which in this case I believe would be a 64 bit kernel. Since you have
the x86 install CD the 64 bit kernel doesn't exist on it. Therefore it
can't find the right generic kernel, so this doesn't really seem like
a bug to me.

All right !
But that could seem ambiguous with certain people ...
With older distro of Ubuntu, when you install from a x86 DVd or cd, it installs
the right kernel ...

Aspire 5024 wlmi (turion 64)
UPDATE :
In fact, It seems to work with any of the proposed options when you go back
an re-install the base system.
Here is the error message i get (in french) :
[!!] Installer le système de base
Impossible d'installer le noyau choisi
Une erreur s'est produite lors de la tentative d'installtion
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. With which Ubuntu installation media did you notice this? Were
you using the Live CD or the alternate CD? Thanks in advance.
