Sometimes the trash gets stuck when you put something from an external
disk in the trash and then removes the external disk without ejecting.
Have you tried that?
If you cannot reproduce the bug we shall mark it as invalid according to
the guidelines : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage#Inva
It hasn't happened since, although it's not the first time I'd
encountered the problem. Other have reported similar problems
(http://askubuntu.com/questions/133393/trash-bin-in-unity-launcher-
shows-full-even-when-empty-ubuntu-12-04).
The Nautilus trash is empty.

thanks for your bug report. Does it happen all the time or has it
happened only once? What does nautilus trash show at that time? is
nautilus trash icon empty? I don't have any definitive query rather than
saying you to test if the very same happens in a guest session as well.
