on the 2 pcs are they the same firefox same ubuntu version same mem and
cpu? if not what ones works better what one is problem? Do you have same
extensions on both pcs? can you reproduce this using firefox in safe-
mode? ( to run in safe mode firefox -safe-mode) What version of firefox
do you see
Recently, I have re installed ubuntu. I believe this was related to some
messed up configuration in my user profile.

I can even use a different browser (e.g. konqueror) and the site loads
in the expected time. But still firefox goes very slow, or never loads
at all

As I said ... I won't be bothered by that because the server might be

Well... Let me expand this then.
I can go to this secure site on my laptop, on the same internet
connection, and the secure server goes fast.
I can go to a secure site on the problem PC, using a different browser
suchas mozilla or opera, and it goes at the expected speed
But whenever I use
https sites are probably slower on server site ... or if you have an
old/slow system. This is not a bug.

I would also like to add that I notice when I close the window during
the loading of a secure site. The program does not fully close and the
process continues to run. When I try to re open firefox in this state, I
recieve a message saying the firefox is already running and I must close
