It is the scale plugin, but I don't think that's the right bug.
I don't recall seeing anyone else report freezes with scale. Only
freezes with nvidia and other plugins: bug 815996, bug 1032276.

This could potentially be due to extra compiz plugins you may have
enabled. Could you run the command: unity --reset and see if it fixes
this?

(Isn't unity --reset obsolete, in Quantal, after the gsettings
transition? You might have to run
dconf reset -f /org/compiz/profiles/unity/
to accomplish the same, now.)
