Im having this same problem and have apport enabled -- how can I locate
the crash logs that have already been submitted by my computer?

compiz crashes soon after startup
To manage notifications about this bug go to:
Desktop icons disappear and reappear during startup. Clicking on the
calculator in the Unity taskbar opens it up (without resize buttons) but
makes taskbar disappear. Clicking on Chrome icon often makes all icons
unresponsive;.Ctrl-Alt-Backspace starts the process again but doesn't
fix it.

Running unity in a terminal starts it up again and lets me work. I'll
see if I can still do that after I reboot.
