I seem to be experiencing this corrupt audio bug as well in Ubuntu
12.10, 64-bit. I hear loud ringing/noise when I start, un-pause, or seek
video in VLC. The same circumstances also induce audio sync issues that
last for several seconds. In my case this only occurs when I use HDMI
audio - the
Mohammad Razavi, with vlc's sound output set to ALSA, sound is lost when
you pause playback, and there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. Either
you have the screechy sound with the pulseaudio output, or you have alsa
output where you can't pause the file you're playing without losing
sound.

I had the same problem with VLC on ubuntu 12.10. Changing the output
module (Tools - Preferences - Audio - Output module) from Default
to ALSA audio output fixed the noise problem for me. The bug could be
reproduced by choosing Default or Pulseaudio audio output output
module in VLC.
