This patch is committed in Saucy. I think I asked to get it backported
into current releases, but I don't think I got a response on that... In
any case, if you're desperate to get this patch, I think you can

This also affects me with 13.04
Apparently the unread status is initiated on every pageload on reddit.com
I don't know if it matters, but I'm using Firefox. I haven't tested this with
Chrome/Chromium.

Ya, I wrote a patch for this a while ago that fixes half the problem (it
doesn't seem particularly easy to fix it entirely, see #1061307) I'll
check in IRC to see if this can get merged in.
