I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy
openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released.
If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then
feel free to reopen this bug.

Issue confirmed. It makes bold headings with (inserted by selecting
heading 1 in toolbar) very ugly when exported to pdf. The spacing
seems to be worse in some font than others. Times New Roman look bad,
Dejavu seems to be fine.
Using cups-pdf printer filter to create pdf do not have this
I can also confirm this problem.
Texts written in typefaces Balker and Chancery Uralic in bold are goofed up
in the exported PDF file.

Thank you for confirming the bug.
I do, however, not think that it is due to the missing bold and bold italics
font set as the problem does not appear under Windows.
I've copied the windows font files just to ensure that the same data is used -
no difference.
